Railroad Westward Expansion from 1860 to 1890 The history of America is grounded in the concepts of immigration, expansion, and economic empowerment. European settlers along the East Coast developed a new doctrine called the manifest destiny that would guide their path. This ideology posited that the United States was destined to expand across the continent, displacing the indigenous communities. The project to join the East and West Coast was pursued on different fronts. Development of the railroad network spearheaded the process as it opened up new lands, connected major cities, and also enabled agricultural and economic growth (Borneman 14). The railroad not only served as a means of transport but also marked the route for the dissemination of inventions, culture, and knowledge gained over the years. Although the railroad is mainly recognized for enabling agriculture, transport, and industrialization, it also played a significant role in facilitating administration. The settlers often faced violent resistance from the natives (Wolmar 18). In fact, several Red Indian communities openly attacked and even sabotaged settler activities to scatter the expansion. Thus, there was a need to set down rules of engagement (Wilhelm 40). The railroad played its role by opening up transportation into the interior allowing for the colonizers to establish administrative frameworks. Mapping out the rail routes also required collaboration with the native tribes. Therefore, settlers negotiated and signed treaties with native chiefs in their respective territories. For instance, the native tribes of Osage, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Pawnee occupied the plains of Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska. The government negotiated a battery of treaties largely dealing with the transfer of land either of settlement o r rail tracks. Famous ones include the Sturges Osage (1868) and Drum Creek Treaties among others (Wilhelm 46). After signing the agreements, administrative posts would be established mainly along the railroads. With time, the posts turned into settlements and small towns. These small rural towns served by the railroad attracted increasingly larger populations that transformed them into cultural hotspots and centers of learning (Hagger 29). Around the 1870s, Cincinnati and St. Louis had attracted a significant population including workers and farmers (PBS Map). Individuals from different cultural backgrounds mingled and interacted to form a unique culture. Various types of food, music, folklore, literature, language, dressing, farming, buildings, and relationships all combined to create the American identity. By 1890, over ten cities with populations of over 100, 000 people had emerged on the westward expansion route along the railway tracks (PBS Map). Cities also served by waterways experienced more rapid growth economically and population-wise (Borneman 191). With time, these cities and rail transport became core elements of the American identity. The westward expansion also tallied with increased agricultural and industrial inventions. Some of the key discoveries in the century included the reaper (invented 1831), the combine harvester (1834), and the steel plow (1837). These implements were essential to agriculture and allowed the expansion of the railroad to spread and disseminate the technology. For instance, the McCormicks reaper was bulky and required to be transported from Virginia where it was manually assembled into the farmlands located further westward in the states of Kentucky, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Ohio (Borneman 119). Railroads offered the best method to transport them. Increased agricultural output resulting from the enhanced technology further increased transportation needs. Laying rail tracks was considerably cheaper than digging out roads and or water canals (Wolmar 14). As such, inventions and railroads had a mutual relationship in that the new creations distributed by the railroad further increase d demand for transportation. Furthermore, increased agricultural production spurred invention of more efficient industrial processes to serve the growing masses. This necessitated the railroad to connect not only major farming areas that supplied raw materials but also industrial cities. Many industries in the food processing sector would emerge driven by inventions in that direction. The mass production of steel, glass and other products stimulated other industries. For instance, availability of steel allowed for new approaches in architectural designs, more so, in multi-story buildings. Buildings such as the Trinity Church in Boston and the Philadelphia City Hall were designed and constructed in the 1870s. The railroads allowed for convenient transportations of construction materials such as steel and bricks. Consequently, inventions in the architectural industry and building and construction would follow the rail tracks westward. Although New York introduced the skyscrapers, the invention would be mastered in Chicago in the 1880s and 90s led by pioneer architects such as William L. Jenney (1832-1907) and Daniel H. Burnham (1846-1912) at the Chicago College of Architecture and the Arts (Hagger 101). As the rail extended further westward, so did the skyscraper design. By 1890s, other cities such as St Louis and San Francisco had their skyscrapers as the railroad connected the East and West Coasts. To summarize, one can say that the railroad has played an integral part in the growth of America. Specifically, between 1869 and 1890, it hastened the westward expansion that allowed the creation of more settlements in the Midwestern plains all through to the West Coast. The rail route also served a significant role in designating administrative posts and even urban settlements that later evolved into the major cities. The majority of the factors that make America what it is today including technology, democracy, and a vibrant culture can all be linked to the railroad network created by the westward expansion policy. Virginia Henderson was known as a modern legend of nursing. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri on November 30, 1897. Henderson graduated in 1921 from the Teachers College at Columbia University, for a Bachelor of Science degree, which she completed in 1931. She also earned a Master’s of Science degree in 1934 (Tlou, 2001). She wrote and edited numerous editions of the Principles and Practice of Nursing. Henderson’s main idea of nursing was that the unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, either if they are sick or well. Nursing Theory Virginia Henderson categorized nursing activities into 14 components, based on our basic human needs. She described the nurse's role, as doing for the patient, helping the patient, working with the patient, and with the objective of helping the patient become as independent as possible. The 14 components started off with breathing normally and to eat and drink effectively. You must eliminate body waste, have good posture and gait, and you must sleep and rest. When dressing a patient you should pick appropriate wear. By checking the patient’s temperature, this would keep it sustained. Henderson believed that keeping the body well cleaned and groomed would make the patient more comfortable and confident. You must avoid injuries and dangerous situations, and communicate with others expressing emotions, needs, fears, or opinions. You must respect one’s ethnicity and belief. A nurse should always feel accomplished and participate with patients in recreational activities. Cannon Bard Theory of Emotion As you are hiking through the woods, a bear walks out onto the path. In an instant you begin to tense up and sweat. In the same instant you are filled with fear. These two events of physiological responses and emotional experience happen at the same time, not one after the other. That is why the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion is a better indicator of how our bodies and minds respond to stimuli.Cannon and Bard highlighted the role of the brain in generating physiological responses and feelings; a role that is important in their explanation of emotion experience and production. The main assertions of the Cannon–Bard theory are that emotional expression results from the function of hypothalamic structures, and emotional feeling results from stimulations of the dorsal thalamus. The physiological changes and subjective feeling of an emotion in response to a stimulus are separate and independent; arousal does not have to occur before the emotion (Adcock, 1976).Cannon-Bard theory states that we feel emotions and experience physiological reactions such as sweating, trembling and muscle tension simultaneously. More specifically, it is suggested that emotions result when the thalamus sends a message to the brain in response to a stimulus, resulting in a physiological reaction(Hayes, 2003). For example: I see a snake –> I am afraid –> I begin to tremble. According to the Cannon-Bard theory of emotion, we react to a stimulus and experience the associated emotion at the same time (Carlson, 2013).The key component of the Cannon–Bard theory of emotion is that when the thalamic discharge occurs, the bodily changes occur almost simultaneously with the emotional experience. The bodily changes and emotional experience occur separately and independently of one another; physiological arousal does not have to precede emotional expression or experience. The theory asserts that the thalamic region is the brain area responsible f or emotional responses to experienced stimuli (Adcock, 1976). Walter Cannon criticized the James-Lange theory for several reasons.He argued that emotion occurs even if the bodily changes which transmit feedback to the brain are eliminated (Hayes, 2003). He severed neural connections to the cortex of cats (creating â€Å"decorticate cats†). The decorticate cats, when provoked, exhibited the emotional behavior normally associated with rage and aggression, as demonstrated by erect hair, growling, and the baring of teeth (Hayes, 2003). (Canon called the behavior sham rage because according to the James-Lange theory emotional behavior could not occur without connections to the brain. I did not answer the phone within three rings or use the proper greeting that the company requires. There were many things I could have done different in this situation. First and foremost I should have done my job and handled her situation right away. However, that was not the case. Since I did not, there were other ways I could have smoothed things over with Aretha and rectified the situation. I should have answered the phone according to the company’s guidelines of answering before three rings and using the standard greeting. I should have not discussed any personal issues that I was having with her or used those as an excuse as to why I did not return her phone call. I should have gone straight to apologizing for my mistake and resolving the issue. I feel as if Aretha was justified in how she treated me. She was frustrated and expressed it to me. I made her angrier over the situation by trying to excuse my actions instead of trying to find a resolution. Personal issues and priorities can sometimes effect customer service because employees can let the mood over them flow into the work environment. An employee could possibly treat a customer with anger or indifference because of these issues. They can also be distracted from performing their required tasks. It is important to separate your home life from your work life. There are times an employee will need to put on a smile and positive attitude even when faced with such issues.

Landscape is used in each poem to create a different atmosphere and effect. In The Lady of Shalott landscape is used to enhance the atmosphere by reflecting the mood of The Lady Of Shalott in the landscape. She starts the poem contented with her life. Long fields of barley and rye This line shows the pleasant world outside, the carefree atmosphere with the fertile land. The poem starts out not indicating that it will have a tragic ending. However the mood of the poem changes when the curse comes upon The Lady of Shalott. Pale yellow woods were waning This line shows the change between the bright pleasant landscapes before the curse, to the now mournful dark landscape appropriate to the death of The Lady of Shalott. Once again her sad mood is reflected in the landscape. This compares to the landscape in Morte d Arthur where the landscape is very painful and harsh, Dark strait of barren land This line contrasts with the fertile land in The Lady of Shalott, which makes the atmosphere in Morte d Arthur very sad and desolate. Unlike The Lady of Shalott, Morte d Arthur indicates straightaway that this a tragic story. The landscape is very threatening so the reader can picture what is happening in the story. The cruel and harsh atmosphere is therefore increased, as the story seems more vivid When Sir Bedivere goes to dispose of the sword the description of the landscape shows the journey from where King Arthur lay to the lake. By zig-zag paths and juts of pointed rock, This helps the atmosphere by creating a treacherous landscape. In Morte d Arthur the descriptions of the landscape throughout the poem are all very harsh, even when King Arthur dies. However in The Lady of Shalott the description of the landscape changes to keep changes in the mood. Colour is also used in both poems to evoke atmosphere. In The Lady of Shalott colour supports the landscape in providing appropriate atmosphere. Four grey walls and four grey towers Where the grey helps us to imagine the dull life that the Lady of Shalott lives compared to the world outside. That sparkled on the yellow field, Enhances the landscape giving the outside world an atmosphere of beauty and serenity. This is the view that the Lady of Shalott sees when she looks out of the window. The reader can picture what Sir Lancelot looked like and what encouraged her to look out of the window therefore bringing the curse upon herself. The use of colour gives the beginning of the poem the bright atmosphere needed. Then when she dies Tennyson uses colour to provide the dark mournful atmosphere required. Lying, robed in snowy white This is an example of how the colour changes from the bright colours before the curse to the now mournful haunting images. In Morte d Arthur Tennyson uses colour when describing the sword Excalibur. The colours help to build up the picture, which helps the atmosphere become more charged. The reader can see what Sir Bedivere was throwing away and why he was so against doing so. When the King dies like in The Lady of Shalott colour is used to provide a dark mournful atmosphere. It is also used to describe what both people looked like when they died. His face was white and colourless Sound is used to evoke atmosphere in both poems. In The Lady of Shalott sound is used to show along with colour the cheerful atmosphere outside on the way to Camelot. And music went to Camelot In Morte d Arthur however sound is used to provide the poem with the haunting chilling atmosphere that it needs. The sea sang shrill, chill with flakes of foam This line gives us an idea of the coldness of the atmosphere. Sound also helps us to imagine Kind Arthur dying. King Arthur panted hard From examples like this we get an idea of the kings condition therefore giving a sad atmosphere to the poem. Weather also evokes the atmosphere in both poems. In The Lady of Shalott the weather at the beginning of the poem is reflected by the mood of the Lady of Shalott. All in the blue unclouded weather Once again this example shows how pleasant the outside world is and giving it the cheerful atmosphere. However later on in the poem when the mood changes when the curse comes so does the weather. In the stormy east wind straining, This example shows that when the Lady of Shalott dies and the mood changes so does the weather. The atmosphere becomes a lot rougher and the reader can imagine the wind blowing very hard. This is a contrast to the pleasant weather at the beginning of the poem, The sun came dazzling through the leaves In Morte d Arthur the weather also reflects the mood, so the weather all the way through is very wild and cold. Like a wind, that shrills This example shows that the weather is in tune with the mood of the characters and helps create the atmosphere. This weather then contrasts with the end of the poem when King Arthur is taken away to what we are encouraged to believe is heaven. Where falls not hail, or rain, or any snow, Nor ever wind blows loudly This is a real contrast to the atmosphere at the beginning of the poem, The mood is now more calm but still sad. In both poems Tennyson uses isolation very effectively to help create atmosphere. In The Lady of Shalott the basis of the poem is that she is isolated in the tower and is only reunited with people when she is dead. Round an island there below, the island of Shalott This example shows how isolated she is from Camelot and the cheerful atmosphere, even though she seems contented. When she dies Tennyson uses isolation to show that she died alone. Singing in her song she died This adds atmosphere as the reader feels pity for her. In Morte d Arthur isolation is used also. The king is left alone in the world to die, although he has Sir Bedivere even he is not doing what the king wishes. For thou, the latest left of all my knights, In whom should meet the offices of all, Thou wouldst betray me for the precious hilt; The reader can see how alone the king is when he dies. Therefore, providing the poem with an atmosphere that is desolate and lonely. This is very much like the Lady of Shalott who is also alone when she died. Pathos is used a lot in each poem as each has a tragic ending. In The Lady of Shalott, pathos is used more when she dies at the end of the poem. As to start with she seems content with her life. When she dies, pathos is used when the curse came upon her. And at the closing of the day She loosed the chain and down she lay; The broad stream bore her far away. This provides a pitiful atmosphere as we see her die. The poem becomes very sad. Tennyson describes her dying in much detail. This contributes to the sad atmosphere. Till her blood was frozen slowly, And her eyes were darkened wholly, This is an example of Tennyson using pathos. Also, when her body is found, pathos is used. Sir Lancelot says She has a lovely face; God in his mercy lend her grace, The Lady of Shalott. Pathos is felt for The Lady of Shalott especially as, ironically, Sir Lancelot he does not realise that he has caused her death. This adds to the atmosphere of pathos as the story is very sad but this is all Sir Lancelot can say. In Morte d Arthur, pathos is also used, as this is the end of the Christian Britain that was Arthur and the Knights. Of Camelot, as in the days that were. I perish by this people which I made, His own people have turned against him. Pathos is also used when Sir Bedivere disobeys Arthur as the reader feels for Arthur. Arthur used to be powerful and in control, he had respect from everybody but now he has none. Authority forgets a dying King This line concludes what is happening to king Arthur, he has lost all authority and the England that was is now no more. So like a shatterd column lay the King; This line sums up what King Arthur has become, the atmosphere therefore becomes very sad and full of pathos. The atmosphere all the way throughout Morte d Arthur is very sad and full of pathos. This atmosphere is appropriate to King Arthur dying. However the atmosphere in The Lady of Shalott starts with a happy atmosphere as the lady of Shalott is content with her life. When the curse comes upon her the atmosphere changes and becomes more like Morte d Arthur. Throughout the poem the atmosphere is reflected in the mood of the characters.

Louis riel essays Viewed by some as a savior, and others as a traitor, Louis Riel, The Father of Manitoba, nevertheless became the voice of the Mtis people during an unstable time in Canadian History. From 1869 to 1885, Riel was the political (and quite possibly spiritual) leader of the Mtis and their struggle to secure a place in western Canadian society. In January 1869, The Hudsons Bay Company sold much of its land to the Canadian Government. Deciding that the Mtis farms would be a good place to install English-speaking settlers from Ontario, the Government sent out surveyors that summer from Ottawa, disregarding any Mtis rights and treating the people with great ignorance. Louis Riel and other Metis stopped the surveyors faced with the threat of losing their land, the Mtis decided to resist by forming a National Committee and setting up a provisional government. By forming a National Committee, the Mtis managed to prevent the Governor from entering Red River and seized Upper Fort Garry. The angry settlers fought back but were surrounded and held prisoner including the very obnoxious Thomas Scott. In an attempt to negotiate with The Government, Riel set up a provisional government in early December. Wanting to become more than just a territory, The Government sent out men to negotiate with Riel and a winter agreement seemed to be headed their way. Peace ended when Canadian settlers attacked the Mtis of Upper Fort Garry. The Mtis managed to capture Thomas Scott again and sentenced him to death. To many English-speaking Protestants in Ontario, this was cold-blooded murder and called upon the Mtis for revenge. French-Canadians felt a common bond with the Mtis causing a massive emotional split in Canada. Beautiful, haunting even – what the surface of the moon must look like, I thought as I sat in the dusk in that almost empty bus. I turned to look out the front of the bus and was suddenly taken completely by surprise. Screaming out at me in great black lettering were the words CANADA NO. 1 COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. My eyes lit up, my heart gave a heave, and I felt a pang of homesickness so acute I actually almost hurt. It was all I could do to keep myself from leaping out of my seat and grabbing the newspaper from its owner. As I learned within minutes (I did indeed beg to borrow the paper), the pronouncement was based on information collected by the United Nations from studies comparing standards of living for 174 nations of the world. Some people may have doubted the finding, but I didn’t, not for an instant. Where else in the world can you travel by bus, automobile, or train (and the odd ferry) for ten, 12, or 14 days straight and see a landscape that changes so spectacularly: the Newfoundland coast with its white foam and roar; the red sand beaches of Prince Edward Island; the graceful curves and slopes of Cape Breton’s Cabot Trail; the rolling dairy land of south-shore Quebec; the maple-bordered lakes of Ontario; the haunting north shore of Lake Superior; the wheat fields of Manitoba and Saskatchewan; the ranch land of Alberta; the mountain ranges and lush rain forests of the West Coast. The list could  go on for pages and still cover only the southern section of the country, a sliver of land compared with the North, the immensity of which is almost unimaginable. For six years in a row now the United Nations has designated Canada the no. 1 country in which to live. We are so fortunate. We are water wealthy and forest rich. Minerals, fertile land, wild animals, plant life, the rhythm of four distinct, undeniable seasons – we have it all. Of course, Canada has its problems. We’d like to lower the crime rate, but ours is a relatively safe country. We struggle with our healthcare system, trying to find a balance between universality and affordability, but no person in this country is denied medical care for lack of money. Yes, we have concerns, but in the global scheme of things we are well off. Think of our history. For the greater part, the pain and violence, tragedy, horror, and evil that have scarred forever the history of too many countries are largely absent from our past. There’s no denying we’ve had our trials, but they pale by comparison with events that have shaped many other nations. Our cities are gems. Take Toronto, where I have chosen to live. My adopted city never fails to thrill me with its racial, linguistic, and cultural diversity. On any ordinary day on the city’s streets and subway, in stores and restaurants, I can hear the muted ebb and flow of 20 different tongues. I can feast on food from different continents, from Greek souvlaki to Thai mango salad, from Italian prosciutto to Jamaican jerk chicken, from Indian lamb curry to Chinese lobster. And do all these people get along? Well, they all enjoy a life of relative harmony, cooperation and peace. They certainly aren’t terrorizing, torturing, and massacring one another. They’re not igniting pubs, cars, and schools with explosives that blind, cripple, and maim. And they’re not killing children with machetes, cleavers and axes. Dislike – rancour, even – may exist here and there, but not, I believe, hatred of the blistering intensity we see elsewhere. Is Canada a successful experiment in racial harmony and peaceful co-existence? Yes, I would say so – and proudly.  When I, as an aboriginal citizen of this country, find myself thinking about all the people we’ve received into this beautiful homeland of mine, when I think of the millions to whom we’ve given safe haven, following agony, terror, hunger, and great sadness in their home countries, well, my little Cree heart just puffs up with pride. To do this, a firm must always increase quality and look for innovative ways to solve problems. All of these are cornerstones of a modern JIT system. Possibly the single piece of JIT most relevant to a study of supply chain management are the partnerships essential to making JIT truly work. A plant cannot implement a JIT system by itself; it must have the cooperation of its entire supply chain. The supply chain must include suppliers, customers, and every department within the company. The sheer amount of information needed for a JIT system to operate well demands that the information flow of the production control system (PCS) coupled with an up-to-date Order Entry and financial system stretches throughout the supply chain, almost to the point at which an entire supply chain operates as one entity. Lastly, gaining workforce commitment to a JIT lean manufacturing system is important. Without the dedication of the workforce, any endeavor is sure to fail. Workforce commitment can be achieved in several ways. A simple way is to cross train the workforce members outside of their normal business function and help increase an employees problem solving ability. In doing so, a firm is empowering its workforce to think about their function in a new way while looking for ways to improve and giving them an overall view of the entire firm, not just their single job. Only then will the proper inventory needs of the plant be truly capable of coming under control and part of a lean moneymaking enterprise. WEAKNESS OF JIT Just as JIT has many strong points, there are weaknesses as well. â€Å"In just-in-time, everything is very interdependent. Everyone relies on everybody else.† (Greenberg, 2002). Because of this strong interdependence with JIT, a weakness in the supply chain caused by a JIT weakness can be very costly to all linked in the chain. Communication is king in a JIT-rich supply chain. There is a risk involved with JIT when there is a communication breakdown and the company cannot generate the correct inventory needed to keep the just-in-time system running smoothly. CHALLENGE AT DELL Dell is known throughout the world as a leader in supply chain management and just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing. Relying heavily on a vendor managed inventory (VMI) model, Dell has nearly eliminated inventory cost while maintaining a JIT manufacturing strategy. Key to supporting this strategy is the ever changing and increasing number of suppliers needed to manage inventory for Dell. In 2002, Dell recognized that in order to continue scalable growth, significant process innovation would be required. After a thorough partner selection process, Dell issued a request for proposal to evaluate potential solutions to address this challenge. SWOT ANALYSIS Strengths: Direct Model: The Dell Direct model was the â€Å"engine of Dells success† (Rangan and Bell, 5). It gave it an advantage over its competitors as it was very hard to duplicate. The Dell direct model was about â€Å"low cost, direct customer relationships and virtual integration† (Rangan and Bell, 5). It was an efficient distribution system â€Å"characterized by build-to-order manufacturing, and products and services targeted at specific market segments† (Rangan and Bell, 5). Basically, this model allowed customers to call Dell directly and order exactly what they wanted in a PC (i.e., they could customize their PCs). It was only after the order was made that the PC was assembled and shipped to the customer in a relatively short amount of time. This Direct Model led to some other strengths Dell was known to have. Differentiated Products: Because of its Direct model, Dell was able to be described as having a differentiated product. Every PC assembled would be somewhat different from the previous based on customer order. This was an advantage for Dell since it enabled it to differentiate itself from its rivals and gain relatively more supplier power. Customer Service After sale customer service was another one of Dells strengths. A customer with a problem could reach a technical support staff through a â€Å"hotline that was manned 24 hours a day† (â€Å"Matching Dell,† 9). After receiving a call, support personnel would retrieve the file that contained details of the customers computer, and could help the customer solve their problem. In approximately 90% of the cases, the customer and support specialist could resolve the problem over the telephone using the â€Å"diagnostic software installed in the factory† (Matching Dell, 9). Customers were very satisfied with Dell and â€Å"rated Dells sales , products, and services highly relative to the competition† (Matching Dell, 9). JIT: Dells Direct Model allowed Dell to manufacture machines that were â€Å"tailored to customer needs† and based on Just-in-Time inventory (Matching Dell, 7). The company assembled computers based on customer orders and â€Å"held no finished goods inventory of standardized machines† (Matching Dell, 7). Holding no inventory allowed Dell to reduce its costs and have a competitive advantage over its rivals. Economies of scale: Dell is the greatest producer of laptops and therefore has economies of scale in the laptop business. In the United States, Dell had the highest market share in the laptop (and PC business overall) with a 24.8% market share, compared to 11.6% for IBM which was the second highest. Economies of scale allow Dell to have more entry barriers, and hence there was less of a threat of new entrants. Efficient Assembly Line: Dells assembly line was quick and efficient. The production process, from the day the order was made, to the shipping date, took only about a day and a half (Matching Dell, 8). This was an advantage for Dell because customers were satisfied with the amount it took for their product to be shipped to them. Weaknesses: Direct Model: Dells Direct Model could be seen as a weakness from another point of view. Dell assumes that its customers are educated, which is not the case for every customer. Dell does not provide a retail service which allows the customers to see their computers, and purchase them right away (advantage of retail is that it is time efficient from the consumer standpoint). Therefore, the model is limited because it cuts off a substantial part of the consumer market. Low market share in the International Market: Compared to its rivals, Dell had a low market share in the international market. In Western Europe, Dell only had less than a 10% market share, and in other parts of the world, Dell had a market share lower than 5% (Rangan and Bell, 23). This is a weakness because international diversification is very important. Since most of Dells revenues come from the US market, having a low market share in the international market is more risky today because of the effects of economic downturns. Limited laptop customization: Although Dell had an advantage in allowing customization within its PC industry, there was a limit to how much you could customize your laptop. Using radio frequency (RF) devices, WWT Site Coordinators on the factory floor generate demand signals to the collocated distribution center initiating the pick, pack and delivery to the factory just prior to consumption. JIT AT DELL: People In the legacy environment, each supplier was required to provide an on-site resource to maintain inventory levels in the factory. Upon implementation of the WWT solution, WWT became the single partner providing resources on the factory floor, reducing the overall number of resources required to maintain continuity of supply. WWT also built a dedicated team of material planners, vendor managers and process consultants to ensure end-to end management and efficiency of the solution. Process WWT brought several process and technical innovations to the Dell team. First, WWT developed a suite of forecast, inventory and demand planning applications calibrated to fluctuations in Dells manufacturing process. Second, WWT opened distribution centers collocated with each Dell factory reducing lead times to 45 minutes or less. Finally, implementation of a RF based barcode scanning system used for product acceptance, replenishment requests and invoice reconciliation at the factory floor. These innovations while removing cost also provided much greater visibility and reliability relative to continuity of supply. Partners Key to the WWT solution was working with each of the legacy suppliers. Management of 40 suppliers with 40different processes and systems was a key challenge that the team faced. Leveraging technology, the WWT team was able to provide an integrated process for each supplier to receive orders, monitor forecast and reduce personnel cost. Also, by reducing entry barriers for suppliers wanting to work with Dell, WWT has been able to introduce a new level of free market competition further reducing SKU prices for individual components managed by WWT. RESULTS WWT successfully developed the needed systems, opened three initial facilities and put together a support team in just under three months. A member of Dells supply chain management team noted, â€Å"Our new program with WWT has created new efficiencies and simplicity in our supply chain. Consolidating supply chain management with a single entity has eliminated a lot of waste.† Dell has been able to acknowledge savings across multiple business areas recognize overall SKU price reductions and experience a scalable process necessary to support Dells overall growth. Since the program began in 2003, WWT has added three additional distribution centers, added more than 50 suppliers, built a team of more than 100 people to support Dell and is expanding into Dells international manufacturing facilities. CONCLUSION: To conclude, in order for Dell to compete efficiently in the laptop industry in the future it needs to take advantage of all of the above opportunities. Our marriage may be over, but our family is not; doing what is best for the girls should be our most important priority. The first step to being a mature, responsible co-parent is to always put our children's needs ahead of our own. It is apparent that we do our best to be there for them as their mother and father. They are a product of both of us and they need both of us in their lives for their long-term well-being. It's been long due that we have a discussion in regards to the children's well being. I hope that in no way that the girls are to gain information or to be manipulated and influenced by either of us in a negative way. Also to not be emotional needy that they develops feelings of guilt or anxiety if or by spending time with one more than the other. Furthermore, not to depend too much on the girls for companionship and support because you are feeling hurt or lonely. I do not intend and I hope that there is no intent on sabotaging the girls relationship with either of us. All of these little problems adds up to huge burden on the children with a situation they cannot control and this could have long term effects on their mental health. They should not bear such a responsibility. It will promote feelings of helplessness and insecurity, causing them to question their own strengths, abilities, self-worth and confidence in future. As parents we should encourage ourselves to only speak positively about one another around or to the girls and there should be no discussion around them that furthers their insecurity such as what you did when I picked them up the other day. Throughout history gender roles in society, as well as in the family unit, have changed. At the dawn of civilization many cultures were led my women in a matriarchal fashion (meaning that females held positions of power and influence over men). The logic behind this idea is one that is women are responsible for creating new life and bringing the next generation into the world, caring for their children and ensuring that our species lives on. It wasn’t until the importance of men in the reproductive process was realized that patriarchal (societies led by men) began to emerge. Once men had the power in the world, they would fight to hold on to it. Religion, â€Å"science†, and social structure would be used for thousands of years to keep women subservient to their male counterparts. As men took over, the structure of society and the family unit changed drastically. The role of fathers and father figures in the assigned readings so far shows different responsibilities owed to a father based on time period and society in which they live. In Mozart’s The Magic Flute, there is not a father characterized in the story, but Sarastro acts as a strong father figure to the protagonists. He is first introduced by the Queen of the Night as the villain of the tale who has kidnapped her daughter and must be punished. Tamino soon discovers it is The Queen of the Night who is evil and Sarastro is the pure one. When Tamino agrees to join the brotherhood, he falls under the authority of Sarastro. There are many references to or about the once secret society known as the â€Å"Freemasons† throughout this opera, the â€Å"brotherhood† is a direct representation of the masons and many of the trials they must go through for membership; with Sarastro representing the Master Mason. Much of the Queen’s hostility towards Sarastro is based on the fact that Sarastro inherited his position from Pamina’s father, Sarastro believes that Pamina is not safe in the care of her mother and uses his authority to save her from her mother, believing that the queen’s influence is not good for Pamina. He also intervenes to protect Pamina when Monostatos makes inappropriate advances toward her. Sarastro has inherited Pamina’s father’s title and along with it, he assumes certain fatherly characteristics, mainly the protective influence a father has over his family. Orgon, the father in Tartuffe, shows some similarities with Sarastro but with one major difference: Orgon uses his fatherly authority to force his daughter into an undesirable marriage. He has grown small-minded in his age and believes Tartuffe to be the poster child for humanity. Obviously, he wants Tartuffe to be a member of his family, and he does so by trying marrying his daughter off to Tartuffe. He tells Mariane â€Å"Yes, Tartuffe shall be allied by marriage to this family, and he’s to be you husband, is that clear? It’s a father’s privilege†. He is abusing the power given to him as Mariane’s father to impel her into a marriage with Tartuffe after he had already promised her to Valere. After much protest from just about everyone in his family failed, Elmire plots to reveal Tartuffe for the scoundrel he is. When the truth about Tartuffe is revealed, he reminds Orgon that everything he owned now belonged to Tartuffe and he tells Orgon to leave immediately. With this, Orgon looses any power he may have had left in his household. After Tartuffe has ruined everyone’s day, all seems lost to Orgon and his family until another father figure steps in to intervene. The King sends one of his personal bodyguards to arrest Tartuffe for a long list of crimes. At this point, Orgon, who’s fatherly authority has been exhausted, is overshadowed by the saving graces of his ruler. The King in Tartuffe is a character who joins the story very late, but is crucial for the conclusion of the tale. He does not show himself personally, as King he has other responsibilities than to directly oversee the arrest of a criminal. His â€Å"Officer† (a Lieutenant Colonel in the original text) arrives with Tartuffe under the ruse of arresting Orgon. The officer reveals himself as an agent of the king and acts as the arm of the king and arrests Tartuffe by royal authority, punishing him for his crimes. He then returns Orgon’s property to its rightful owner and pardon’s his crimes as reward for his â€Å"loyal deeds in the late civil war†. With Tartuffe arrested, the family is able to return to their normal lives and Valere and Mariane marry as they were meant to. The king, as the ultimate political authority, saves the day and concludes the play with his just judgements upon his subjects. Tartuffe himself is a father figure in his own regard as a clergyman (even as a fraudulent one). Religious leaders hold a certain power over their subjects, interpreting the will of their deity and communicating it to the common people. Orgon and Madame Pernelle’s inability to see through Tartuffe’s act as everyone else has is proof of the devotion they give to their spiritual leader. Whatever Tartuffe councils, they obey without question. This will get Orgon into trouble in the case of the strongbox which he entrusts to Tartuffe. Even when they are presented with evidence, the two refuse to accept that Tartuffe is anything but holy. It takes physical evidence seen by their own eyes to disprove their beliefs. Tartuffe’s priestly disguise holds power only because of title (even if it is counterfeit), and not because of any kind of lineage or appointment to leadership. Each of the aforementioned father figures share similar responsibilities in their respective family units. The king and Sarastro have much larger family units, but they have to care for and protect their people just as a father does. Tartuffe as an assumed priest in the Catholic Church bore the responsibilities of leading a catholic ? flock. It is said that a man’s house is his castle, and Orgon runs his castle with an iron fist, but he leads it nonetheless.
